I cannot imagine not wearing lipstick! I have 3 lipsticks and 4 glosses right now in my not so big purse! My Mother also did not believe in leaving the house without lipstick. Didn't care if you even brushed your hair, as long as the lipstick was applied! Fun read and cannot wait to try some of your picks. I have also bought a Dior gloss and paid to much but it was worth it!!
And once again folks, she’s done it. Could have easily sent out links to lipsticks when asked but instead, had us all waiting with bated breath, and delivered this amazing piece about lipstick. Lipstick of all things. The history and symbolism of it are my favorite parts. This just shows your talent and ability to deep dive and take your readers (and viewers…insta live 😜) on amazing journeys about literally anything and everything. Thank you Emilie for making anything you write about interesting and fun. 👄 💄
Write about it all!! I’ve been on vacation and am just now catching up. Read your Epstein/Pam Bondi piece from 7/8 right after lipstick and was thinking how much I love your multi-faceted-ness. And I love that you can have a conversation with yourself about one thing while writing about something else. One of your many talents.
This is giving modern day Carrie Bradshaw. Like the above commenter, I was expecting a list with links but you went above and beyond as usual. Love this piece. I used to rock this magenta lipstick from maybelline- everyone would ask where it was from. I since stopped because of the clean beauty thing, but after reading this, I might have to put it back on.
My motto is also that you cannot have too many lipsticks. I mix and match my own shades with the ones I own to get that 'one of a kind' color. I grew up in the 70's and '80's and walked to the beat of my own drum. I never went with the 'fads'. I owned every look that made me look good. I know what looks good on me, and Emilie I'm proud that you stuck with the lip color(s) that you like and look good on you! :)
As an artist, I have always found women’s complaint about makeup and societal beauty standards to be ridiculous, even to the point of indicating low self-esteem or weak mindedness.
Having these tools at your disposal is a great advantage. A woman can bump up her looks several numbers with these tools if she decides to put in the time. A man has none of them. He simply styles his hair and puts on his suit and looks the way he looks, and that’s all he gets.
And frankly, ladies, a quick shade of lipstick and a little mascara get you 90% of the way there. You don’t have to cover every pore of your skin, you don’t have to paint on a kabuki face. You don’t even have to use eyeshadow for every day stuff. But when a woman wants to take it to the next level, she can absolutely do it in a way that men can’t do.
And for the love of Pete, do not listen to the plastic surgeons peddle their wares. Natural lips are beautiful. Thin lips are beautiful. Inflated shiny lips make you look like you’ve been punched in the mouth. Being punched in the mouth is not beautiful.
Stretching your face into a tight mask is not beautiful.
For the aging ladies over 40, hair is your secret weapon. Beautifully styled and colored hair makes you look youthful and beautiful. You don’t need the Botox or surgeries to erase natural aging. In aging women, long, styled and colored hair is 90% of the game. Plus the fashion of course.
Stop resenting beauty standards and embrace having a few tricks up your sleeve instead of being stuck looking the way you naturally look like men do.
And frankly, with the arrogance of young modern women thinking they are all supermodels, I definitely preferred the old days when they were a little self-conscious, more self-aware that they aren’t all supermodels.
I always think about that. How women can just "fix" something they don't like or cover it up with makeup. But men don't have that luxury-- unless they're a man who likes makeup.
My hair is silver silver silver and I had to give up the coloring (unless I wanted to touch it up every two weeks). Now I just add lavender or pink or something temporary if I want it different.

Tales of a girl who started going gray at 19 🙃 it can be beautiful, too!
This may be weird but it is so fitting for this article… when we buried my dear grandmother in June, we put her favorite tube of lipstick in her hand because she always had it with her!! 💄
Wow not many Substack people wear lipstick....so who were the people DEMANDING THE UNREDACTED LIST?!!?!?! LOLOL

Also, my mom never goes without lipstick so this really resonated with me. And she uses the end of the tube as a mirror!
Mamma is hard core and I love it!
I agree! This was so fun to read.
I love how you pulled together the history of lipstick!!! And how you went from that….right into Diddy and lipstick colors!!
Your writing is SO easy to read. It flows beautifully!!! I just might start doing lipstick again.
No lipstick talk at the Diddy trial. Only nail polish- White "creamy white"
Oh, I saw that. He’s an odd one, for sure.
I guess it was an IFKYK thing. He made them wear it. God only knows what else he made them do.
Thank you so much for being there and keeping us up to date.
I can’t imagine what all you heard.

I’m obsessed with lipstick! However, I never asked about your lipstick because I’m all good with mine.

Even if the man does like make up, he can’t pull it off.

I’m a fan of the colors. My wife says gray hair is good on men but makes women look like witches. In all kindness, I agree with her. 🤷♂️

aw that is so sweet. What was the color?
We did for my grandma too ❣️
So sweet and not weird at all!
